Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Released

1 June 2006: Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Released

The Edubuntu team is proud to present Edubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support)- The "Dapper Drake" release. Included in this release are installation CDs, live CDs, and combination DVDs for i386, PPC, and AMD64 architectures.

Edubuntu is the education-focused counterpart of Ubuntu, offering fast, easy installation of stand-alone systems, thin clients and servers. Like Ubuntu, Edubuntu 6.06 LTS offers long term security updates after release (3 years for desktops and 5 years for servers) , a hand-picked selection of applications installed by default, and a plethora of additional packages available via download from the Internet.

About Edubuntu 6.06 LTS

Edubuntu 6.06 LTS has been an exciting release for our team. We've added PPC support, new Live CDs work Workstation installation, and assembled the first Edubuntu Cookbook.

In order to experience all that Edubuntu has to offer, you'll need to try the CD, but the following highlights may whet your appetite:

  • LTSP clients now enjoy a themed graphical login manager.
  • We've added the option for sound support on thin clients.
  • Edubuntu now ships three themes by default in its -artwork package; with a simple "dpkg-reconfigure edubuntu-artwork", one can select the systemwide default look.
  • Edubuntu LTSP now supports various serial devices including touchscreens and serial tablets.

Some treats for administrators:

  • Enjoy using multiple architectures for LTSP clients (It is now possible to build the client chroot on AMD64 systems for i386 clients by running "sudo ltsp-build-client --arch i386" post install).
  • LTSP now finally supports the X_COLOR_DEPTH variable to force the usage of 16Bit on the clients through lts.conf.
  • By default we now install only the linux-image package in the client chroot, the excessive memory usage of the restricted modules package is gone!
  • A special netboot mode was introduced to initramfs so only network device drivers are loaded, this reduces the size to two thirds of a normal initramfs and speeds up the bootprocess.
  • The ltsp-build-client script now has options to manually enable extra and security mirrors during chroot creation.
  • The default mirror of ltsp-build-client points to archive.ubuntu.com now.

As always, Edubuntu includes the very best of the 100% free/libre application software world, and each new release incorporates countless new features and bugfixes from the global development community.

Upgrade information for Edubuntu 5.10 ("Breezy Badger") users

For Edubuntu LTSP users, it is recommended to recreate the client chroot to take advantage of all new features (some of them are set up during chroot creation, so you wont see them with a plain package upgrade). A detailed step-by-step instruction is available at:
